Relay Race sketches
Sketching some ideas for a new t-shirt design. Walkers and Runners from all over the Pacific Northwest indulge in one weekend out of the year to journey from Mt. Hood to Seaside, Oregon. The journey ends here in the little town of Seaside, where locals welcome the runners at the end of the race. Teams come up with clever names, like “Toe-Jammers”, or “Holy Walk-a-mole”.
Donna Louise Designs
The Roe Law Firm, LLC
Problem:
To convince people seeking copyright & trademark services to use The Roe Law Firm because they are experts at what they do, instead of using larger law firms who will be more expensive and impersonal.
Solution:
The use of a funnel shape conveys a unified approach, and the blue color symbolizes peace and tranquility. Serif font faces show stability, longevity and trust.
Oregon Zoo Campaign
Deliverables:
Presentation files for the following: 60 Second TV Spot Storyboards, Billboard, Bus Wrap, Trimet Bench, Oregonian full-page ad, Oregonian half-page ad, T-shirt Design
Problem:
To convince parents to take their children to the Oregon Zoo, instead of other activities, because it is a reality expanding experience. Use of an existing logo required.
Solution:
The use of a line drawing of a child interacting with a line drawing of an animal in its photographed environment. The juxtaposition of a photograph and illustration helps support the theme/tagline “expand reality”. The plain illustrated child is reaching into a real world full of color and texture. Illustrating the animals the same way as the child connects the two. They are in the same place, but the child needs to go to the habitat to have this experience.
Fall Kickoff Poster

Solution: After researching this busy, distressed style I decided to use orange and green to symbolize fall. It needed to be gender neutral. Scanned images of a dried leaf and raindrop icons are meant to mimic the temperature and weather we have here in Portland, Oregon. Distressed and irregular letters make this visually playful to get the youth excited about attending. The most important information is placed in a starburst pattern where it draws your eye.
Ecola Bible School Reunion T-Shirt Design
My college sent out emails inviting each class member to volunteer in any way they could for our upcoming reunion. I volunteered to create a graphic for the t-shirt design. I submitted two ideas and this one was chosen. I also presented three color combinations, male, female, and unisex.
The “rock” is representative of the local monolith Haystack Rock, and the curved and spotted areas are representative of the ocean and it’s movement.
Jiffy Lube Magazine Ad
Problem:
To convince 18-30 men to take their cars to Jiffy Lube because Jiffy Lube is the best place to keep your machine well oiled instead of other ‘quick lube’ establishment. Find the perfect spokesperson for Jiffy Lube that would appeal to Game Magazine readers.
Solution:
Bender from Futurama© seems to be the perfect liaison for gamers and Jiffy Lube. Bender drinks a lot, but when he drinks Jiffy Lube oil, he is in top form.
Political Party Poster
Problem: To convince 18-20 year-old men and women that voting doesn’t have to be just something that you have to do, but something that can be exciting and fun. A poster to be posted around a college campus.
Solution: A female form is so cliche, but when placed in juxtapose as here, it creates intellectual interest. “Why is there a female form, and what is this party that’s being posted?” If you can just peak their interest, then you can get your point across. Remember to vote.
Invitations!
Problem:
To convince my family and friends that they should come to my portfolio show and graduation ceremony because it will be fun and the more the merrier!
Solution: Use of Identity colors creates a continuity between all self-promotion items. I used a well known landmark to signify where the event will be held. Curly brackets are not only plesant to look at, but they draw attention to important times. This needed to be mailable so people out of town can join in the festivities.
‘The Edge’ Identity & Postcards
Problem:
To convince 11 to 13 year-olds to attend a church youth group because it’s fun, exciting, and not boring like some other church activities for your parents. Also for parents to know their kids are in safe hands. The client wanted this to have the same style as a poster previously designed. Distressed and dynamic. A map was requested for the backside of this postcard, with contact info, address, and street names.
Solution:
Front | Use of blue and pink shows both girls and boys are welcome to attend. Wings symbolize angels because this is a christian church. A starburst focuses your attention to the logomark, which is black and bold to stand out in the busy background.
Back | A vector drawing simplifying streets and labels was used with a star marking the church location. Distressed and varied font faces were used to give it a hand drawn look. The most important information being simpler and bolder than the rest. In order to create a hierarchy within this complex card, layering and transparency is essential.
‘Death Trap’ Play Set Posters
Deliverables: Electronic PDF files were given to the client so they could print large format locally.
Tools Used: Photoshop, Illustrator, Web Research
Posters produced for Cascade Theatrical Company in Bend Oregon. The play was Deathtrap. These were used for set props in 2007.
Each poster represents a play that the main character wrote, and had to represent the style of the era in which they were written.
Strawberries & Champagne Package Design
Problem:
Design an identity and packaging to convince consumers to purchase this fragrance line from a small upscale women’s boutique, because you can’t get this anywhere else.
Solution:
Black background shows sophistication, and red lettering is seductive. Hand-drawn script adds a touch of a handmade quality whereas the sans-serif font for content info is modern. I used bubbles to convey Champagne, and red circles to symbolize strawberries. All the packaging has printed interior of swirling red on red circles to reiterate the bubble.
